How does it feel to be selected for the Alumni 100 list?

"A real surprise. A pleasant one as it's a great university and I enjoyed my year of study at the Business School."

What made you choose to study at the University of Edinburgh Business School?

"The breadth of the syllabus and the international student intake. I was particularly interested in international marketing and business, for which the Business School had a strong reputation. Also, Edinburgh is a great city and the University is a leading global brand–it made for a winning formula. Not that there was much downtime to enjoy Edinburgh!"

What are your memories of studying at the Business School?

"It was hard work but there was a great mix of students, faculty, and stimulating coursework."

What key thing that you learnt at the Business School do you still rely on today?

"International business is all about understanding your community in its broadest sense, not just your direct business relationships. And that financial models are full of human assumptions..."

Proudest work-related achievement to date?

"Working to establish Shell's global Renewable Energy business in its first iteration in the late 1990s, and now as COO at the Crown Estate as it plays a key role in growing the UK's offshore wind energy sector."

What's the one thing you think current students need to develop or learn before entering the modern workplace?

"Business is about people. None of us should lose sight of that at any stage of our life and make sure we continue to question the impact of whatever it is that our business is doing."

International business is all about understanding your community in its broadest sense, not just your direct business relationships.
