Originally from Greece, Georgios moved to Copenhagen thanks to his MSc in Finance, and recently secured a new role as a Financial Controller. A proud alumnus, the virtual Global Alumni Day in May gave him the chance to feel like he was back in Edinburgh again.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Edinburgh Business School?

I chose to study at the University of Edinburgh as it is one of the leading universities in the world with great heritage, high reputation, and academic quality.

As I wanted to acquire a solid foundation in financial theory and investments, the Business School was the right place to be. It keeps all the classic values of the University of Edinburgh and adapts them to the modern business world. Additionally, I was fascinated by the broad, international network of alumni and I wanted to be part of it.

Tell us about your career path (before and) after graduating?

Before studying in Edinburgh, I had already acquired a master's degree in Business Strategy and had made my first career steps in account management and consulting. The MSc Finance degree from the Business School made me more attractive internationally and gave a boost to my career, focused on the field of finance.

Shortly after graduation I moved to Copenhagen, where I worked as a Financial Analyst for the British American Tobacco. More recently I have moved to WSAudiology, again in Copenhagen, where I am working as a Financial Controller.

How did your degree prepare you for your future career?

My degree prepared me very well for a career in finance. Through the classes, I acquired a strong foundation in modern financial theory and became familiar with many financial databases and tools like STATA, Bloomberg Terminal, S&P Capital IQ, and Refinitiv EIKON.

I had the opportunity to learn from knowledgeable professors, collaborate with students from around the world, and resolve real financial cases from well-known companies like Baillie Gifford.

What key thing that you learnt at the Business School do you still rely on today?

The most important thing I learnt at the Business School is to be persistent and to look for solutions outside of the box. This is a key learning that I am following since then.

What is your proudest work related achievement to date?

My proudest work-related achievement to date is that I have worked for big organisations internationally and I have developed capabilities which my colleagues recognise.

Tell us about any recent involvement with the Business School and what you have gained from being involved?

I participated in the Global Alumni Day in May 2021 during which alumni from every corner of the world and Business School staff gathered virtually and discussed a variety of topics.

Although restrictions meant we could not meet in person, it felt very nice to be among other alumni and university members. It felt like being in Edinburgh again. It felt like being at home.

Alumni wisdom — if you could offer one piece of advice to current students, what would it be?

Be internationally available and take the first opportunity that will appear in front of you.
