MSc Carbon Management 2009
Alumni 100Co-founder, Carbon Masters
After 35 years working with companies like IBM and PWC, Kevin changed course in 2008 to pursue his goal of tackling climate change and joined our first cohort in the MSc Carbon Management.
How does it feel to be selected for the Alumni 100 list?
"I am of course both delighted and honoured to receive this recognition from the University of Edinburgh Business School."
What made you choose to study at the University of Edinburgh Business School?
"I was part of the very first cohort of the MSc in Carbon Management in 2008. I came to Edinburgh specifically to be part of this programme as I had become convinced that we needed to do more to tackle the climate change issue, and that if I was to do that, I needed to learn a lot more about it."
What are your memories of studying at the Business School?
"I was an (im)mature student (56!) returning to academic study after a gap of 35 years spent working for corporates like P&G, IBM, and PWC. So to spend a year studying alongside a cohort of exceptionally bright, passionate young people from all over the world in a beautiful city like Edinburgh at a top-notch business school was a real pleasure, and as it turned out, life changing."
What key thing that you learnt at the Business School do you still rely on today?
"The importance of establishing a robust business case for any proposed project or change initiative."
What's the one thing you think current students need to develop or learn before entering the modern workplace?
"That learning new skills is an ongoing necessity to succeed in the modern workplace. The Business School can provide a strong foundation on which to build those skills going forward."
Proudest work-related achievement to date?
"We formed Carbon Masters in Scotland in 2009 on graduation, where we advised companies how to measure and then reduce their carbon footprint. In 2012 we established Carbon Masters in India where we have successfully developed an innovative GHG emission reduction solution behind our Carbonlites Bio-CNG initiative in the fastest growing energy market in the world. We have also partnered with two of India's largest Corporates, Tata and Mahindra & Mahindra, and got them to invest in building businesses in this space with us."
