The keynote speeches were given by two of the most influential scholars in the field; Professor Weiying Zhang and Professor Huiyao (Henry) Wang. Professor Zhang is the Sinar Mas Chair Professor of Economics and Director of the Institute of Business Research at Peking University, in addition to co-founding the China Economic Association. His talk on The Origin of Innovation in China provided many key insights on Chinese innovation and its relation with Chinese regulations on patents and opened a friendly, but thought-provoking discussion among the attendees. Prof. Huiyao (Henry) Wang is the Founder and President of Centre for China and Globalization (CCG). His talk on ‘China’s Path to Globalisation and Role in the New Global Era’ was a fascinating look at how China integrates with the world in terms of finance and regulations.
In addition to the keynote speeches, the workshop also invited a group of experts on law, regulation, finance and corporate governance to give three roundtable discussions. Participants included Xiaolan Fu from Oxford University, Xiaohui Liu from Loughborough University, Yingqi Wei from the University of Leeds and Jason Xiao from Cardiff University. They shared experience and best practice on publishing in top academic journals. Jinghai Zheng from Peking University also shared his research on development models.
The rest of the workshop was organized into parallel sessions with three presentations on the topic of law and finance, followed by insightful discussion. The session chairs were selected from a wide range of UK universities. The presentations covered many important issues, including financial development, youth and innovation, financial risk, social capital and human development, inequality, Chinese reform, and foreign direct investment. The papers presented in this workshop were carefully selected by the workshop committee, and exhibited great potential to be published in top economic and financial journals.
The day was very well attended and the feedback from the delegates was extremely positive. The workshop gave us the opportunity to build on our organisational skills and to network with and learn from some of top academics in the field of corporate governance.
