Non-Executive Directors (NXDs) are ever-more important in an age that demands responsible and accountable business. The return of a highly successful learning and networking programme at the University of Edinburgh Business School promises to upskill people who are ready to play a stronger role in the strategic direction of their organisation, writes Professor John Amis.

I'm delighted to be able to announce that the Business School and leading Executive search firm FWB Park Brown are once again inviting applications for our NXD programme, a unique opportunity to learn about what is required to be a successful NXD. Once again, the format of the programme is geared to provide learning from the real-life experiences of accomplished Board Chairs and NXDs.

These are just two of the many positive comments we had following last year's NXD programme. It's clearly helping close a gap in the market.

The programme is for individuals across the private, entrepreneurial, public, and third sectors. It's ideal for new NXDs and those seeking their first appointment. The programme comprises eight evening sessions between September and December, led by some of the most experienced board members in Scotland who will share with us what has and hasn't worked during their various board tenures. Further, each session will feature stimulating small group exercises, Q&A, and informal networking receptions.

The best NXDs understand how to manage everything from boardroom dynamics to potential crises. They strike the right balance between being supportive and challenging. We will show you how to add value to organisations that are often crying out for better leadership and better strategic decision-making.

We've shaped our programme in light of previous years' feedback and with a view to emerging trends. In particular, this year we are embracing data-driven innovation with the objective of helping fill the need for NXDs to help the 400 companies that are planned for launch over the next ten years as part of the Edinburgh City Deal. To this end, this year we offer specific sessions on understanding the implications of big data, Fintech, and ethical decision-making in areas such as Artificial Intelligence.
