University of Edinburgh Business School recently played host to officials from the Chinese city of Dongguan for a summit on low-carbon technologies.

The group of municipal government officers, environmental engineers and utilities managers, made the visit to learn more about the latest developments in environmentally-friendly industry practices being pioneered by the School.

During the visit, delegates met with colleagues from the School’s Centre for Business & Climate Change, and members of the Executive Development and Partnerships teams.

The visit is the latest milestone in the Business School’s developing relationship with the City of Dongguan.

In November 2014, Dean Professor Ian Clarke, Professor Richard Harrison and Dr Xi Liang spent time in the city with its deputy mayor – where they discussed potential low-carbon collaborations with the Dongguan Water Investment Company.

Earlier this year, the Business School also lent its academic expertise to support a new US-China partnership to develop new carbon capture and storage (CCUS) technologies in collaboration with .

Dr Xi Liang, Director of the Centre for Business at Climate Change at University of Edinburgh Business School, said:

“Having had the opportunity to visit Dongguan last year, we were very pleased to be able to reciprocate the city’s kindness by welcoming delegates to Edinburgh.

“The School found the visit invaluable in helping to develop our relationship further, and to learn more about the real low carbon challenges Dongguan faces.

“We hope to build on this enthusiasm to develop a mutually-beneficial framework to work together towards our common goals and purposes, and create a meaningful partnership with the city in the future.”

In 2011, the School created the world’s first MSc in Carbon Finance to develop responsible low carbon investment leaders.

It also recently developed a strategic partnership with Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management – to integrate its world-leading expertise in carbon finance, management and strategic leadership with the leading Chinese business school’s financial innovation and economics capability.
