Victor Hugo Deli sells a variety of food and drink from around Europe. Located on the opposite side of the Meadows from the University, it is the perfect spot for a quick cuppa in between lectures or a great start to your day!
The exterior is a red painted building and usually the smells of baked goods will guide you towards it. The interior is cosy and it is also dog friendly!
The Food
Victor Hugo has a wide range of breakfasts and lunches including pastries, brownies, gluten free options, vegan treats, rolls, quiches and platters.
The Coffee
Here is a photo of a tasty cappuccino I enjoyed on a cold winter's morning in 91.
Artisan Roast

Locations: 57 Broughton Street, Bruntsfield & Stockbridge Edinburgh
Approaching Artisan Roast you will notice an engraved wooden sign, and a trendy black and red design style. The inside consists of a front room and a cosy back room with a big window letting in lots of light. The café prides itself with the claim that “JK Rowling never wrote here”!
Artisan Roast is widely claimed to be one of the best places for coffee in Edinburgh, and the beans are used in many cafes in the city. They have a tasting ‘lab’ in Canonmills and a roastery in Prestonfield, which blend and package the beans that are harvested from plantations around the world, and are sold and served in their cafes.
The Food
They have pastries and some light lunches as well as hot chocolate spiced with Aztec chilli or rose!
The Coffee
Certainly lives up to its reputation. It was a brilliant cup of coffee!

Red Kite Cafe

Red Kite café has a large interior with lots of seating and desk space making it a great spot to do some studying and work on assignments. More than that, the grey and red exterior will draw you in to this trendy café. The interior also has an interesting stretch of “raw” brick wall and a tasty display of treats.

A lovely variety of food including vegan chocolate squares, unusual combinations such as a lemon and pistachio polenta cake, gluten-free pistachio shortbread, scones, breakfasts and tasty lunches.
The Coffee
Very strong cappuccino with perfect foam.
