A new city, a new country, a new culture, a new language, new food and new people! All of it sounds interesting, as well as adventurous, but only those who have experienced it know that it also comes with a lot of challenges and learning.
Moving to Edinburgh for my postgraduate education has been one of the most major decisions I've made in my life. I was excited, but also scared of all the ‘hows,’ ‘whys’ and ‘what ifs’. Since, this was the first time I was travelling internationally, and on my own, I had a hundred doubts in my mind. And so did my parents.
However, as soon as I stepped onto this Scottish land, like a lot of other people, I was in awe of its beauty. This city looks exactly the same as it appears on our .
The at the airport were very helpful and helped me to grab a taxi so that I could conveniently reach my accommodation. Because it was all new for me, I was scared and hesitant to even walk around to find the entrance to my accommodation. I was also trying to look for people from my own country, so that I could feel good emotionally and get a homely, secure feeling. Even though that didn’t happen, a little help from a few strangers made my day. A few students who were probably from different countries helped me get my luggage to my accommodation. This was totally unexpected, but it made me feel good.
The first day in the new city was very cold and windy for me but yes, I did manage to keep myself upright! I met a lot of new people and quickly became aware that it was not only me who was trying to cope with the new weather and people. As a new student, some of the things that I have come to understand is that I have to be prepared to face all kinds of weather on a single day and that I have to walk. A LOT! Also, the city has its own charm and beauty, so even though I get lost walking back to my accommodation almost every day, I get an opportunity to explore a lot of it. The city has a lot to offer because of its rich culture and history.
Moving here has not been easy but it has given me a different experience. It has given me a sense of responsibility and independence. I have interacted with so many people from different nationalities after coming here, and am amazed to see how interested they are in learning about each other’s culture. I also appreciate the fact that my accommodation team and the Business School has given me a lot of opportunities to interact with people by arranging small get-togethers and parties.
It has been enriching to talk to my classmates, who come from different countries, with different experiences, and have different opinions on various aspects of HR. My experience has been great so far and I have learnt quite a few new things. I look forward to the coming weeks and opportunities where I can see myself grow as a person, personally and professionally.
